## History

Hotel Weyanoke opened in 1925 as a community development project of the Farmville Lions Club and was, at the time, the largest hotel in Prince Edward County and one of the largest and most regal hotels between Richmond, Virginia, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Its 1925 grand opening drew a Farmville parade of about 2,500 people, and between 1926 and 1928 it hosted ten statewide conventions. Author and activist Helen Keller was among its early guests. In the 1980s the building was converted into a home for the elderly and later served as Longwood University student and sorority housing before a full rehabilitation returned it to its original use as a hotel, reopening on May 7, 2018. The restoration preserved original 1925 architectural elements — including marble floors, a tin ceiling, chandeliers, windows, and the front desk — paired with mid-century modern décor.
