what is the Hillsman House?

The Overton-Hillsman House, overlooking the historic field that was the site of the last major Civil War battle in Virginia, served as a field hospital for wounded soldiers. Believed to have been built in the 1770s, the structure is constructed of hand-hewn timbers, wooden pegs and ironwork. The small 1 1/2 story building served hundreds of patients. Today, costumed interpreters conduct living history events throughout the year.

What happened at Sailors Creek Battlefield ?

Infamous as the scene of the last major battle in the Civil War in Virginia, Sailors Creek Battlefield is where Confederate General Robert E. Lee lost 7,700 men, including eight of his generals on April 6, 1865. The loss was instrumental to his decision to surrender three days later at the Appomattox Court House, signaling the end of the war in Virginia. Today, annual re-enactment battles and costumed living history events take place at this historic site.
